Clayton’s (2009) study investigated the impact of shoeing on carpal joint motion in horses. The researchers compared the carpal joint kinematics of shod and barefoot horses during various gaits, including walk, trot, and canter.

The study found that shod horses exhibited significantly reduced carpal joint flexion compared to barefoot horses. This reduced range of motion was evident across all gaits, suggesting that shoeing may restrict the natural movement of the carpal joint.

The researchers attributed this reduced flexion to the rigid hoof capsule imposed by horseshoes. The rigid shoe prevents the hoof from conforming to the ground’s surface, limiting its ability to absorb shock and adapt to uneven terrain. This lack of adaptability can lead to increased stress on the carpal joint and potential for joint problems.

The study’s findings support the notion that barefoot horsekeeping may be beneficial for overall joint health, particularly for the carpal joint. By allowing the hoof to function naturally, barefoot horses may experience enhanced flexibility, shock absorption, and reduced stress on the joints.

While shoeing may be necessary for specific conditions, such as medieval war conditions, the study’s findings suggest that barefoot horsekeeping can be a viable alternative for maintaining joint health and promoting overall well-being in horses.
