There are several factors that can contribute to deformation of the horse’s hoof.
One of the main reasons for hoof deformity is improper weight distribution in the hoof due to its angle and/or conformation or because the entire horse stands or moves unevenly. Horses that carry more weight on one leg than the other, or horses whose conformation affects weight distribution, may experience uneven wear of the hooves. Over time, this can lead to deformation of the hoof, causing poor posture, movement problems, compensation in the body and general health problems.
Another factor that can contribute to hoof deformities is improper trimming or shoeing. Horses that are improperly and/or irregularly trimmed or shod can put pressure or stress on certain parts of the hoof, which can cause deformities or damage.
It is important to note that barefoot horses have a chance to correct themselves during the trimming cycle because they trim and adjust the hooves themselves by movement, unless the hoof deformities have affected locomotion. Improperly shod horses have no chance to improve, but only get worse because the hoof only continues to grow during the trimming cycle while gravity continues to collapse the hoof. In our opinion, there is no shoeing that does not change the shape of the hoof over time, only “good shoeing” makes it slower than bad shoeing, which makes it very fast.
In addition, other factors such as nutrition, environment, and genetics may play a role in hoof deformity. Horses fed a diet deficient in key nutrients or kept in a humid or unsanitary environment are more prone to hoof problems. Genetics can also play a role in a horse’s susceptibility to certain hoof conditions, and these horses should be very carefully cared for and trimmed frequently to support proper hoof development and reduce the risk of aggravation.
It is key important to work with a professional and passionate equine hoof care professional to address any hoof deformation issues and to develop an appropriate management plan to promote healthy hooves.
