Introduction
In a collaborative effort between Swedish Agricultural University (SLU) and Agria Animal Insurance (Agria Djurförsäkring) a groundbreaking research study has been initiated in 2021 to unravel the mysteries surrounding horse shoeing. Spearheaded by Professor Lars Roepstorff, this study aims to explore how riding horses with or without shoes affects their health and overall performance.
The Three-Part Approach: This research follows a comprehensive three-part approach.
Firstly, a thorough literature review has been conducted to grasp the existing knowledge in the field.
Next up are in-depth interviews with seasoned riders, veterinarians, and farriers, delving into their experiences with both shod and barefoot horses.
The final phase involves high-tech measurements on horses, using cutting-edge technology to analyze their movements and calculate forces in the legs.
Selective Insights
Crucial to the success of this study is the meticulous selection of interviewees. The team is reaching out to national equestrian teams’ veterinarians from top-performing countries to ensure a diverse and experienced perspective.
Challenges and Anticipated Outcomes
While the study foresees challenges in managing vast amounts of data, it promises to deliver results in 2022. The positive reception from the equestrian community and experts reflects the significance of this research in shaping our understanding of the intricate relationship between horse shoeing and biomechanics.
Stay tuned as we embark on this journey to uncover the impact of shoeing on equine performance, aiming to provide valuable insights for horse owners and enthusiasts alike.
